It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness- “the Christopher’s”

During these difficult times, we are always in search of some light wherever possible and we are honoured that Christ Cathedral has chosen St Killians to allow those to light a candle for that special intention.

“Since the early days of Christ Cathedral earning its new name and becoming a Catholic icon of worship, plans have been in place to add votive candle stands to the campus.

Before construction started in the main cathedral, stands were placed inside the doors, and donors could go online and make an offering, and a candle was lit in their honour; candles were viewed via live stream. Once construction commenced, the candles were placed on hold.

A few years later, Kymm Binnquist property manager and Father Christopher Smith Rector, worked to find the safest, cleanest burning and most elegant candles and stands, that would fit in the different areas of Christ Cathedral. Saint Killians Candles, manufactured in Ireland, were chosen. The Killians stands have been placed in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, the main Cathedral, next to the Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and in the Bell Tower.

Daily Mass attendees and visitors to the Cathedral can light a Killians Candle, signifying a fulfillment of a vow (Latin, votum) although traditionally in most cases the intention is to give honor and to seek help from the saint before whose images the candle is lit and to pray for the deceased.

Bishop Kevin Vann, often speaks of his mother lighting a candle each time they attended Mass when he was a child, and teaching him and his siblings the importance of the offering. This timeless tradition is now possible thanks to St. Killians, the generous donors of the stands, and the Christ Cathedral team.”….OC Catholic Newspaper
